While Manual Woodworkers and Weavers was officially started by Thomas Lemuel Oates in 1932, the company's origins trace back even further. Oates' entrepreneurial drive can be traced back to his days farming in Bat Cave, North Carolina with his brother. They would assist their mother in gathering materials for her crafts and eventually began crafting wooden whistles, buckets, and birdhouses. These handmade goods were sold along with their mother's crafts to travelers passing through Charlotte on their way to the mountains.

After losing his job at the Ashville Postcard Company during the Great Depression, Thomas Oates was inspired to start his own business selling crafts produced by local women, such as cornhusk dolls and woven pieces. Drawing on his experience in the wholesale business, he built a waterwheel to power his mill and began crafting products to sell. The business grew over the years, eventually being passed down to his son Lemuel Oates, who took over in 1973 after returning to Bat Cave. In 2007, Lemuel's children, Travis and Molly Oates Sherrill, assumed leadership of the company.
